A New Symbol of Faith, Love and Hope Is Rising Again.
Bigfork, Montana
High above the Flathead Valley, a magnificent 100-foot cross will soon stand atop a mountain, carrying forward a landmark that touched generations of residents and visitors.
Much Greater
Than a Landmark.
For those who have lived in or visited Bigfork, the Flathead Cross represented faith, hope and a community coming together around something with meaning far beyond itself.
Montana’s Flathead Valley Cross represents a legacy, one that has connected generations through a shared message of enduring love. From its location high above the valley, it will invite all who see it to pause, look upward, and reflect on the promise of faith that carries us through life’s journey.
Today, we all have an extraordinary opportunity to carry that legacy forward.
Our Story
For More Than Half a Century, It Watched Over the Valley.
“It was God’s cross.”
For decades, a giant white cross stood along Montana Highway 82, welcoming travelers into Bigfork and becoming a beloved symbol of faith. Built by a local craftsman, it endured countless Montana storms before finally succumbing to an intense windstorm.
Though the cross fell, its message did not. The memories, photographs and meaning it carried remain part of the community, and inspired a vision for a new cross.
A Legacy Carried Forward
Though the Cross Fell,
Its Message Did Not.
The Vision
Montana’s New Flathead Valley Cross
A new 100-foot cross is being created by Flathead Valley Cross, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Bigfork, Montana. Led by a local Board of Directors, the organization remains committed to responsibly managing the investment in this community-wide project.
A grand effort is underway to ensure the Cross is professionally engineered, built and installed to last for generations to come.
The Structure
- 100’ Tall
- Steel Fabrication
- Concrete Pedestal
- Nighttime Illumination
The Cross will stand on a 9-foot, two-tier cement base requiring 119 cubic yards of concrete. It will have an exterior of white composite to avoid painting and will be attached at the base with 3′ anchors that can withstand 1.3 million ft. pounds. There are no guidewires. The sides are 5’ wide and the Cross arms are 53’ wide.
Simply said: It will be engineered to withstand wind gusts up to 110 mph, and feature soft nighttime illumination designed to remain visible across the valley.
